If you’re in Ibiza and you’ve searched ‘running races near me’ or ‘half marathons near me’ – look no further!  You may be surprised to hear that Ibiza is a very sporty island.  There are Running Races in Ibiza almost every weekend outside of the peak summer months – many of them are Road Races but the Trail Races on this green & hilly island are really special.

There are a lot of Running Clubs in Ibiza and their members turn out at the races in force, all wearing full-on club strip.  Some races have very generous prizes for top performers in their category, and most races put on a far better food spread than Running Ibiza ever experienced in the UK!  Entry costs are generally very cheap (a couple are even FREE!) and many races have events for kids and/or walkers beforehand .  Normally you can collect your number in advance of the day of the race (location dependent on the race).

To help you find a race, below is a list of the Ibiza Running Races (plus a couple in Formentera) that tend to take place each year (but obviously you should check out the event website to ensure it’s definitely happening on the year you want to visit!), plus links to other websites that are useful references:

2018 was the inaugural event for this race, which starts and finishes in Sant Joan.  A tough but stunning route which on the 20k takes in a lot of the coastline and even a flooded tunnel!  Will be held on 15th  September in 2019 (2018 was 3rd weekend in September).  No website but entries are via Elite Chip.
  • Cursa Popular Pla de Sant Mateu: 10k Race or 5k Walk (Road)

  • Cross Popular Formentera: 5.2k (plus shorter distances for kids) (Road)
This race takes place in Ses Illetas in Formentera, and it’s FREE.  You can register at the start of the race up to 30 minutes before the start.  3rd weekend in November.  (As with most (all?) races in Formentera, runners get a discount on the ferry from Ibiza, plus a free coach transfer from Sa Savina Port in Formentera.)

  • Cursa de Sa Sobrassada: Half Marathon Team Relay (plus shorter distances for kids) (Road)
This race is to celebrate the time when Sobrassada is made on the island (and is generally held on the second-to-last weekend in November).  Sobrassada is a cured, raw sausage, made as part of the festive rituals that mark the coming of winter.  Very tasty on toast or in pasta.  Anyway, there are 4 different categories for the team event, ranging from 1 to 3 runners and a mix of male/female/mixed.  The course is a 1.5k circuit of Santa Eulària, and it’s up to each team how many laps each runner completes.  No website but entries are on Sportmaniacs.

The last race of the year, held on the last Sunday in December, is FREE!  And open to everyone 10 & older.  It’s short but very steep (which is why it’s called ‘Ascent to the Cathedral’), starting in Ibiza Town Port & finishing in front of the Cathedral at the top of the UNESCO World Heritage Dalt Vila.  Although it’s free, you must register in advance (normally by the Friday evening before the race).  No website but registration is via Elite Chip.
