Yes it does sometimes happen! If you’re on holiday as a couple it’s easy enough to while away a rainy day in the shelter of a restaurant, but if you get a few rainy days in a row, or if you’re on holiday with the kids, you might need a bit of inspiration to make the day pass quicker! So here’s our suggestions for what to do on a rainy day in Ibiza:
- Visit Casa Broner – Erwin Broner’s 1960s house in the Sa Penya district of Ibiza Town. Broner was a renowned German architect who lived in Ibiza on and off between 1931 and his death in 1971. His work is all over Ibiza and this is the house he designed and lived in with his wife, who donated it to the council when she died. It’s beautifully restored and preserved with some very clever design features, and the views are wonderful. And it’s free of charge!
- Visit the Necropolis Puig de Molins at the side of the Dalt Vila in Ibiza Town. It’s said to be the world’s largest and best preserved necropolis, and was established by the Phoenicians in 600BC! As well as visiting the museum to see some of the grave goods found in the crypts (jewellery, painted ostrich eggs), you can also visit some of the crypts themselves, which were first discovered when a mule fell into one! As with all Ibiza’s museums, it’s open every day except Monday (but closed for siesta in the early afternoon), and costs a couple of €.
- Visit the Museum of Contemporary Art in the Dalt Vila. Even if you don’t like art, this place is worth a visit because the floor of the basement is made from perspex and you can see the foundations of the Dalt Vila beneath your feet! Oh, and it’s free of charge!
- Visit the Madina Yabisa Museum near the cathedral at the top of the Dalt Vila. Housed in the beautiful 15C Curia building (courthouse), this museum shows what life would have been like in the Dalt Vila when the Moors lived here and the Dalt Vila was a Medina. It has a really cool audio visual model that shows how the city would have developed over the centuries. Same opening hours & cost as the Necropolis.
- If it’s not raining too hard and you can still get out and about there are loads of interesting places around the island that are worth visiting and are all free of charge:
- The abandoned nightclub, The Festival Club, near Sant Josep
- The abandoned hotel at Cal D’en Serra, near Portinatx
- The watchtower Torre de Balanzat near Port des Sant Miguel. (There are 7 watchtowers in Ibiza but this is the only one that’s always open)
- The Andrew Rogers sculpture Time and Space close to Cala Llentia. Make sure you take a look at the ‘Doors of Es Vedrá’ whilst you’re there (100m northeast).
- The chapel Capella d’en Serra, high up in the hills above Sant Josep.
- The ruins of the first Phoenician settlement from 650BC, near to Sa Caleta. Whilst you’re there you can check out the gun emplacements from the Civil War too.
- There are cinemas in both Sant Antoni (Cine Regio) and Santa Eulària (Teatro España) which frequently play movies in English. Follow the links to see what’s playing whilst you’re here. (The Multicines in Ibiza Town sometimes plays films in a language other than Spanish but it’s infrequent and hard to find the information.)
- For those that aren’t feint hearted, going for a trail run or a hike is one of the best things to do on a drizzly day – why sit indoors being fed up with the weather… you might as well get out there and experience it! Contact us to organise a trail run, or Ibiza Hike Station for a hike.
- Go for a Spa Day: Atzaro, Can Curreu, Hacienda Na Xamena, Six Senses and Aguas de Ibiza all have spas which non-residents can use.
